HISTORY

 

Constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950’s, Lake Lanier is a multi-purpose lake that provides for flood protection, power production, water supply, navigation, and recreation. The lake is a 38,000-acre reservoir with over 692 miles of shoreline. The total cost of construction was $45,000,000.

Milestones in the History of Lake Lanier

  • 1946 - Congress authorized the construction of Buford Dam

  • March 1, 1950 - Groundbreaking held on the Gwinnett County side of the future Buford Dam site

  • February 1, 1956 - The gates of the intake structure on the dam were closed

  • June 17, 1957 - The first power was generated at Buford Dam

  • July 4, 1957 - Holiday Marina opened

  • October 9, 1957 - Dignitaries dedicated Buford Dam, using 3 Coca-Cola bottles filled with water from the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers

  • In 1957, more than a quarter million people visited Lake Lanier

  • May 25, 1959 - Lake levels reached full pool level of 1070'

  • In 2006, more than 8 million people visited Lake Lanier
